The manufacturer of the Brother printer sets a limit on the number of pages that can be printed with a particular toner cartridge. When this limit is reached, the printer will display an error message and lock the printer, preventing further printing (the toner light will flash yellow or the computer will display a “replace toner” message). To save costs, you can reset the toner and continue printing.
Here are two methods for resetting the toner on a Brother HL 2140 printer:
Method 1: Resetting the toner on a Brother HL 2140 by sliding the switch
👉 Open the printer cover, remove the toner cartridge, and turn off the printer (but do not unplug it).
👉 Use a small object or tool to insert into the hole on the left side of the printer that has a switch lever to indicate that the door is closed.
👉 Inside the printer, there is a small lever next to the slot where the toner cartridge goes, which engages with the gear of the toner cartridge. After inserting the tool to switch the door, the printer will rotate. After about 3 seconds, use your left hand to press and release this lever.
👉 When the Ready light turns on, the process is successful. Then turn off/on the printer. If it doesn’t work, repeat the steps above.

Method 2: Resetting the toner on a Brother HL 2140 by pressing the button
This is a simpler method to reset the printer. Here are the steps:
– Open the printer cover.
– Turn off the printer (but do not unplug it).
– Press and hold the Go button on the printer.
– Turn on the printer while continuing to hold the Go button for 15-20 seconds.
– Release the Go button and wait for about 5 seconds, then press the Go button twice.
– Wait for 5 seconds, then press the Go button five times in a row.
– Wait for 5 more seconds, then close the printer cover. The printer can now be used normally.
